Palirika danielsi Lambkin & Yeates
Medium to very large dark flies (wing length 15 - 23 mm). Dark thorax, pink anteriorly and brilliant maroon scales posteriorly, scutellum brilliant maroon scales, abdomen purple on T2-3, blue scales on T4-6. Scales on APA reddish-brown to dark brown. Black wing, broad linear infuscated band, small extension along M2, anal full. Sub-epandrial sclerites joined medially.
Male.
Head. Face and frons dark reddish-brown with shiny, pale, pink metallic scales; setae black, longest below distinct frontal depression. Antennal scape 3 x length of pedicel, red; pedicel red; PP 3.5 - 4 x length of pedicel, black with silvery pruinescence; BSM not expanded apically, brown, 2.5- 3.5 x length of pedicel; ASM pointed, length less than width of BSM. Occiput with broad line of white scales filling occiput.
Thorax. Collar white. Laterothoracic stripe of white scales narrow, interrupted narrowly by PA wall; sparse white scales posteromedially. Scutum dark with metallic scales anteriorly shiny pink, posterior to transverse suture bright, shiny maroon. AN with black Ma; long, lightly iridescent scales at base of wing black. Scales on APA reddish-brown to dark brown. Pleural hairs black. Laterotergite with black Ma, dark reddish-brown dorsally. Scutellum black basally, dark reddish-brown apically, with metallic scales bright, shiny, maroon, sometimes admixed with blue. Sparse white scale fringe on posterior margin. Legs. Forelegs red with dark reddish-brown scales. Mid- and hind legs red with black scales. Pulvilli sharp, curved, 1/3 length of mid- and 1/2 length hind-tarsal claws. Halter knob brown. Wing. No spur-veins, i-r1 long, 4 x length r-m, cup narrowly open or closed only at wing margin. Widened base of C with dark, maroon metallic scales, white scales posteriorly. Wing pattern black with broad linear infuscated band either not following R1 and following R2+3 to i-r1; or follows R1 proximal to i-r1 and R2+3 proximal to i-r1 by length r-m; deeply through apex of dc to M2, at least basal 5/6 M2 infuscated, usually meeting wing margin both sides of M2, small extension along M2, not indented in 1st r2+3; broad medial hyaline area continuing anteriorly through dc, partly into r5. Anal and cup fully infuscated or apices mottled. Broad concave anal. Squama edged with long black scales, admixed with paler scales, especially basally.
Abdomen. T1 with black Ma, black scales. Tergites black except T1 laterally reddish rarely, T7 dark red; with metallic scales bright maroon at least on T1-3 and T6-7, often admixed with blue, T4-5 bright blue. Genitalia. Epandrium red with short apical flange, with long setae strongly grouped anterolaterally; basal flange short and broad; SES joined medially. Gonocoxae red, strongly narrowed apically; with setae black, short apically, long thick tufts medially, directed basally, continuing laterally around apex of H; medially two tufts of 4 strong black setae directed basally; no ventral ridge; LAEA deeply convex, extending past G margins; GS cupped within G margins, large subquadrate base projecting apically; EP long, smoothly expanded apically 1.7 x neck width, apical margins inturned, without lateral lobes, with short medial projection, medioventral flange above AE absent; large recurved R; H large, triangular, laterally subrectangular, projecting distinctly, laterally delimited by swollen and expanded G.

This species has only been collected from a small area in southern Queensland.
