Male.
Head. Frons and face dark red with shiny yellow scales, scales filling frontal depression and surrounding occipital groove; black setae longest below deep frontal depression, shiny golden setae on ventral clypeal margin, laterally beneath antennae. Face with two rounded lateral lobes at apex of clypeus. Antennal scape more than 2 x length of pedicel, red; pedicel dark red; PP more than 2.5 x length of pedicel, black with reddish pruinescence; BSM red, less than 2 x length of pedicel, almost length of scape, slightly expanded apically; ASM short, fine. Distinct narrow band of creamy-white scales on posteroventral margin of eye.
Thorax. Collar reddish-yellow. Laterothoracic stripe indistinct but present at base of wing, reddish anteriorly, cream medially, yellow posteriorly; fringe of fine, long, scales on PA wall. Scutum shiny black; very shiny, reddish, transparent scales; long, fine, hair-like anteriorly; broader medially and posteriorly. Pleural vestiture of black setae with mauve iridescence, admixed with long, red scales; admixed yellowish-red and black Ma on PE and AN; long scales at base of wing red with mauve iridescence. Anepimeral setae admixed black and reddish-yellow. Scales on APA cream to red. Plumula and TR hairs creamy-yellow. LT with Ma yellowish-red, some black ventrally, cream dorsally. Scutellum red; scales very shiny, large broad transparent, creamy-white anteriorly, yellow medially; black setae. Legs red; fore-, mid-tarsomeres 2-5 black; dark reddish-brown to black scales; anterior surface of mid-femora with several strong black spines, one longer than width of femur. Pulvilli wedge-shaped, half length of mid- and hind-tarsal claws. Halter knob yellow. Wing. M2 very sinuous with abrupt 90˚ bend apically, r5 open; cup closed at wing margin, or very narrowly open. Widened base of C with reddish-yellow scales, paler shiny yellow scales posteriorly. Patagium dense yellow scales, contrasting. Wing pattern (Fig. 24D) black, with infuscated band to i-r1 cross-vein; meeting wing margin broadly over entire posterior margin of m2, partly in cua; distinct apically-directed extensions along R2+3, CuA1, very small on CuA2. Hyaline band into dc anteriorly, basally through apex of cua, cup and anal cells, narrowed medially in m2; ‘keyhole’-shape, sometimes reduced to two separate hyaline areas; cup hyaline on extreme apex, anal hyaline at least apical quarter, especially marginally. Alula red, reduced. Squama yellow, with pale yellow scales.
Abdomen. Integument black with large yellowish-red areas laterally, rounded medially, width > 1/3 width of T2-4 and T6-7; T5 with reddish lateral areas < 1/3 breadth of tergite. T1 with cream to yellow Ma; long, cream scales laterally. T2 with dense long cream hairs on anterolateral half. Very shiny dark reddish-brown to black scales except for narrow line shiny, reddish-yellow anteromedially on T2; broad dull white band on T3, broadly interrupted medially; T6-7 with sparse white scales. Sternites yellow; S2-3 with dense, white scales; dense, long, fine white hairs; S4 with some yellowish-red scales medially and laterally, rest white scales, with sparse black setae posteriorly, scattered long white hairs on S4-5; S5-7 with red scales and black setae. Some specimens with yellowish-red scales on S4-5, only scattered darker red scales laterally on S6. Genitalia. Epandrium red with basal flange short, broad, subquadrate; thick black setae strongly grouped anterolaterally on distinct anterolateral flanges; SES long, linear, almost joined basally. Gonocoxae red, strongly narrowed medially, distinct division medially, continuing laterally on line of flexion; LAEA large, convex; GS cupped within G margins; large recurved rami extending beyond G margins; dense basally-directed tufts of thick black setae on distinct ventral ridge that projects slightly basally, shiny golden yellow setae continuing laterally around apex of H, H not projecting. Epiphallus long; apically slightly expanded, with broad flattened area with long, projecting, medial extension; well-developed, rounded, lateral lobes. Basiphallus rounded. EJA short, extending beyond G for less than length of GS.
Female.
Same as male. Genitalia. Dorsal T8 A shorter than wide, entire, with short lateral projections, long linear supports; T10 with 3 pairs of short, thick AC spines; long broad spermathecal tubes; apical endplate small and simple, basal endplate with thick processes; short tube asymmetrically between pump and BB; sparse, long, lightly pigmented, pump papillae; broad striated clear thick-walled ring between round BB and round, heavily-pigmented SR.
Comments. The colour of the vestiture of the type specimen has faded. It has paler dorsal vestiture, mesonotum with yellowish scales, and abdomen with reddish-brown scales, rather than black. Many specimens from Carnarvon Range Qld have very pale sternal vestiture with only a few pale reddish-brown scales on S5-7. These specimens are like K. corusca but lack the yellow scale band on T5 and the long medial projection on EP and are therefore included in K. adelaidica. Specimens with very few pale reddish-brown scales on S5-7 but with the yellow anterior scale band on T5 have been included in K. corusca.
This species has been collected throughout Australia.
